I’m taking a week off from my marathon training. I’ve been slogging through discomfort on the left side of my body for weeks now. However, last weekend the pain continued even on my rest/yoga days….So no running for me. I’m not sure exactly when it happened but I’ve seemed to have injured my left knee. As my husband likes to remind me I am “hardcore” and have an odd definition of injury.
My definition of injury: If a part of my body hurts only when I’m running I’m NOT injured. If said body part continues to bother me the next day when I’m not running then I’m injured.
Merriam-Webster’s definition of injury: Suffer physical harm or damage to (a part of one’s body)
There are three possible explanations for my current injured state:
- I crashed & burned on Saturday, December 22. I was on mile 10 during a long run from Central Park to Brooklyn. Someone put a long hanging chain over the exit by Canal Street. I thought I had cleared it but was mistaken. I fell completely forward into the pavement – smashed my iPhone (had to replace it), banged/cut up my left shin and hurt my right hip. Then, my “crazy runner self”, got up and continued to run 7 more miles
- My accelerated training schedule (11 weeks instead of 16) has put too much strain on my body
- The wrong shoes. In November I switched from Saucony Kinvara to Brooks PureFlow. It’s possible my semi-new shoes aren’t right for me.
I’m really hoping that my left knee feels better after 7 days of R&R because marathon #2 is on February 17.
38 days left!!!
